Electronic Logging Device Mandate: Beware of Citations

August 21, 2017 – With the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate, we are finding enforcement is citing organizations for not abiding by the following requirements:

Operating Instructions

Instructions for how to operate the ELD unit should be obtained from the ELD provider and kept in the vehicle.

Paper Logs

Paper logs may only be used in the event an ELD unit breaks down. Drivers must carry paper logs with them in case such an event were to occur.

Rental Vehicles

In the event your vehicle breaks down, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) does not allow drivers to use paper logs. The driver will be required to utilize an ELD unit. Before renting, please verify with the rental company that they offer an ELD unit.
