Hiring Qualified Drivers: The Application Process

Is your organization checking driver applications thoroughly to see that the best, qualified drivers are being hired?

When it comes time to hire new drivers for your organization, a critical eye during the application process can prove to be beneficial. Make sure to look for gaps in employment when reviewing driver applications. Gaps in employment can mean that the applicant was terminated for a positive drug or alcohol test, serious accidents, or other negative actions that could affect your operation.

Along with a critical eye, it is also helpful to do some research. Contact previous employers to gather as much information on the applicant and document your findings. Not only is verifying the last three years of employment a Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation, but it protects your organization in the event that driver is involved in a serious accident. Thorough investigation of a driver’s employment will help you select the best candidate for the job.
